LEWIS BLACKWELL ROLLED into the Manos bar parking lot around noon. He drove a polished silver off-road runner. The car was immaculate and Dawn doubted it had ever been through a puddle or over an obstacle larger than a speed bump.

The midday sun overhead beat down on her. She contemplated investing in a vehicle with a roof as the temperature climbed with every passing moment.

A mirrorlike haze rose around the Five Stacks neighborhood.

Bar patrons came and went. Jules Hardy’s black sedan remained where it had been the night before. Did he live there? Surely not. But he hadn’t come out, she guessed, so all-nighters were part of his routine.

Two hours later, Lewis emerged outside with one of the women from the night before. She wore an unbuttoned tan raincoat and a thin white dress. Today, she had her hair up in an intricate set of double buns. They got into his runner and the engine hummed to life before he drove off.

Dawn followed at a distance.

They crossed town and Lewis led her to a private street in the Commonwealth’s Sea Breeze district. The center greenspace featured a row of tall palm trees. Three mansions on either side of the lane. They pulled into the last one on the right. Dawn pulled up into the shade and watched them through the gate as they went inside.

Thick hedges, security cameras, and the neighbor had dogs barking from somewhere in the house.

If this was Lewis’ place, he was doing alright for himself. She doubted the bar was his sole income. So what did he have to do with Vincent and Elara’s disappearance?

She adjusted the palm-sized pistol in her waist holster. Hated to carry it, but had picked it up from the apartment when meeting Pascal.

He had spotted it, the brat. “That’s one of Eve’s guns. What if she needs it?”

Dawn had assured him that Evergreen commandos receive all the firepower they need to carry out their missions.

“But what if she comes back for it?”

“I’m only borrowing the one. And she said I could have it.”

“But what if she needs that one?”

Frustrated, Dawn snapped, “Then I’ll be sure to be home to give it back to her.”

It was only then she caught his smirk.

The city under attack, her mother using again, and her brother in rare form.

The black sedan appeared and was driving towards her. She kicked her bike in gear and cut across the plants growing around the base of the palm tree, making a tight turn before zipping off.

Jules Hardy sat behind the driver’s seat. He didn’t even glance her way. Had he missed her? No way to know.

She cursed herself for being sloppy. Found a spot at a corner where she could watch the intersection.

Ten minutes later, the sedan drove off, with Lewis Blackwell in the back seat. She couldn’t tell if he was alone. She drove slowly back to the mansion at the end of the lane. No other cars outside. She parked just past it, leaving her bike out of sight next to an ivy-covered fence.
